The slope of a roof is properly known as its pitch and flat roofs have up to approximately 10. Anything pitched 3 and 12 or less is considered a low sloped roof. An example for a steep sloped roof is 8 12. This means that the rise of the slope goes up or down 8 inches for every 12 inches.

Some sources consider low slope to include 3 12 pitch roofs. Flat roofs are an ancient form mostly used in arid climates and allow the roof space to be used as a living space or a living roof. Slopes greater than 18 12 are found on a frame roofs and some mansard style. If a roof rises one inch over 12 inches it s called a 1 in 12 and it would be a low slope.

The ratio can be indicated by a division slash separating the numbers such as 2 12 or 7 12. Low slope roofs are from 0 to 3 12 in pitch. Roof pitch refers to the amount of rise a roof has compared to the horizontal measurement of the roof called the run. In building construction roof pitch is the steepness of a roof quantified as a ratio or as number of angular degrees that one exposure surface deviates from horizontal level.
