Replacing the glass in an older single pane window is a project that may be within the capabilities of an experienced do it yourselfer but it s a complex job that requires removing the old putty and glazier s points removing the broken. This putty often lasts decades but over the years it becomes rock hard cracks and even falls off the window. I still have all my original windows and don t ever want to replace them if i can avoid it. Window panes may also be held in place without the use of putty. Apply the epoxy to the crack in the glass using a putty knife. On closer inspection i could see the glazing had cracked away from the window. The only real reason to replace the putty is if it has become old and cracked or its integrity surrounding the glass has been compromised. Firstly remove all loose putty or flaky paint sand down and apply the filler using a filler knife.

Work the adhesive back and forth across the crack gently. Take care not to scratch the glass when rubbing down.
